Last week, our program accompannied a fantastic group of partnership scholars to the #csuicm22 conference, where they learned more about interdisciplinary cancer research on our CSU campuses.

Inspired by their experience, our scholars decided to apply for #sdsussf funding to present their research at the #ncur2023 conference. The deadline for SSF grant funding was yesterday, and within three days, they had finished more than 80% of their application.

We cannot help but feel so proud of our scholars, and as their advisor on the SSF application cross my fingers for good luck on their first grant submission. If funded, they will be traveling to UW-Eau Claire next Spring to present their research on cancer health disparities under the mentorship of UCSD and SDSU faculty mentors.

Meet David Anjakos, '20/21 scholar, interning with

Meet David Anjakos, '20/21 scholar, interning with Dr. Alfredo molinolo (MD-Ph.D.), Professor of Pathology at UC San Diego.

David's research aims to evaluate the Cancer Registry data for UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and determine the increase in minority patient enrollment in the Biorepository. To do so, he aims to continue working in Dr. Molinolo's research team beyond the PSP internship.

As a rising senior and part of the disabled community, David's advice is "do not let others define you, refine your craft, then prove them wrong."

Meet Christina Jackson, '20/21 scholar, interning

Meet Christina Jackson, '20/21 scholar, interning with Dr. Carrie House (Ph.D.), Assistant Professor of Biology at SDSU.

Christina's research aims to identify how adipokines, cell signaling proteins released by fat cells, enhance ovarian tumor cells' survival and ability to evade or cope with cancer treatment. More specifically, she aims to see if these adipokines play a role in the survival rate disparities seen in African American women with ovarian cancer compared to the Caucasian population.

As a rising senior, Christina will continue her research with Dr. House as she prepares to apply for medical school.

Meet Lara Aziz, '20/21 scholar, interning with Dr.

Meet Lara Aziz, '20/21 scholar, interning with Dr. James Murphy (MD), Associate Professor of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences at UC San Diego.

Lara's research objective is to define and identify the health disparities linked to telemedicine among cancer patients.

As a senior, she applied and was accepted to Keck Graduate Institute, Master of Science in Community Medicine (MSCM). Ultimately, she wants to obtain an MD and become a medical doctor.

Meet Desiree Santos, '20/21 scholar, interning wit

Meet Desiree Santos, '20/21 scholar, interning with Dr. John Bellettiere (MPH-PhD), Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD; and Dr. Andrea Z. LaCroix (MPH-PhD), Professor and Chief of Epidemiology in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD.

Desiree's research objective is to assess the sedentary behavior of women with breast cancer and other cancers from older women living in ambulatory and community living.

As a senior, she applied and was accepted to MPH programs in Epidemiology this Spring. She will be attending an MPH program in the fall to continue her studies in epidemiology. Ultimately, she wants to obtain a Ph.D. and become a professor of epidemiology.
